No one really wants to be in a situation where you have to defend yourself, but just in case the unthinkable happens, keep these Self Defense tips in mind.

1. Prevention Is the Best Self-Defense
Prevention is the best self-defense. Attackers, are looking for unsuspecting, vulnerable targets. So follow general safety tips like being aware of your surroundings, only walking and parking in well-lit areas, keeping your keys in hand as you approach your door or car, varying your route and times of travel, and other personal security precautions.

2. Get Loud

As soon as you know escape isn’t possible or the attacker touches you, yell as loud as you can. Use the phrases “Get Back”, “Leave Me Alone”, “No” or any other short phrase to show the attacker you are not easy prey. This will not only show your attacker you are not an easy target, but it will also alert people in the area you need help. This does two things: it signals for help and it lets the attacker know you’re not an easy target.

3. When walking to your car, home, apartment

Keep your keys in your hand. They can be used as a weapon if need be, but you will also be able to get into your car (or home) faster. While we do not like to expect something to happen to us, it is better to be safe than sorry.

4. Where to hit

If being attacked and you have to hit, here are several areas of the body that might work. The throat, solar plexus (right below the middle of the chest), between the eyebrows, the groin, the eyes, and the shins. While it cannot be predicted which part of the body, if when hit, might cause your attacker to stop, the point is, these are all spots on the body that may hurt when hit. You do everything in your power to cause the attacker to stop, so you have a chance to get away.

5. How to hit

Depending on the position of the attacker, how close the attacker is will depend on how to him him. DO NOT STEP CLOSER TO THE ATTACKER. If the attacker is farther away kick (or run if you can get away). If the attacker is closer to you, use a closed fist (thumb outside your fist to avoid breaking it), palm of hand, elbow, knee, or any part of your body that you can put strength behind.

The point is, prepare yourself in advance, because unfortunately these things can and do happen. And then, if you are attacked do what you HAVE TO DO to get away. This list is not meant to save you or anyone that is being attacked. It is provided for informational purposes only. If you would like training or more self defense instructions, it is suggested you take a self defense class in your area.

When you hear ‘Memorial Day’ what is the first thing that pops into your head? Vacation day? Three day weekend? Barbecue? But do you really know what Memorial Day is? Memorial Day, also called Decoration Day, is a day set aside to honor those who died in service to our country.

Veterans Memorial
King, NC

On May 5, 1868, three years after the Civil War ended, General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic declared Decoration Day (Memorial Day) as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of those who died serving during the Civil War with flowers and should be observed on May 30. On May 30, 1868, flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. On that day, approximately 5,000 people attended the ceremony, about the same amount that attend the event today.
By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations designating the day, and the Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper observance at their facilities.

However, it was not until after World War I, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress. It was then changed to be observed on the last Monday in May.

Poppies & Memorial Day

During WWI, John McCrae, a Canadian who enlisted to help the allies, wrote the poem “In Flanders Field”. The poem was published in Punch magazine and by 1918 the poem was well known throughout the allied world. Moina Michael, an American woman, wrote these lines in reply:

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies

She then adopted the custom of wearing a red poppy in memory of the sacrifices of war and also as a symbol of keeping the faith.

A French women, Madam Guerin, learned of the custom and when she returned to France she made artificial red poppies and sold them to raise money to benefit the women and children in war torn areas of France. This tradition spread to Canada, The United States and Australia and is still followed today. The money collected from the sale of poppies goes to fund various veterans programs. In 1948 the U.S. Post Office honored Moina Michael for her role in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent postage stamp with her likeness on it.

National Moment of Remembrance

In December 2000, Congress passed and President Clinton signed into law, “The National Moment of Remembrance Act,” to ensure the sacrifices of America ’s fallen heroes are never forgotten. The Act also created the White House Commission that’s purpose is to “encourage the people of the United States to give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity” by encouraging and coordinating commemorations in the United States on Memorial Day and the National Moment of Remembrance.
The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.

Will you pause at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who died in service to our nation?
